January.
Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu nationalist in India.
February 25th
Communists took over power in Czechoslovakia. Stalin's influence extended into Czechoslovakia, as the country became an Eastern bloc country.
April 1st
Tensions grew in Berlin as the Soviet authorities halted trains entering West Berlin.
April 15th
US nuclear test, 'X-Ray', was detonated at 6.17am at Eintewok with a yield of 37 kilotons. The test was part of 'Operation Sandstone'.
May 1st
Eintewok US nuclear test, 'Yoke', was detonated at 6.09am with a yield of 49 kilotons. The test was part of 'Operation Sandstone'.
June 24th
At 6.00am the Soviet Union blockade of West Berlin began.
June 26th
United States and Britain implemented the 'Berlin airlift'. More than 2-million tons of food and coal was flown into West Berlin during the blockade.
 
The tension of the blockade in Berlin saw American and Soviet tanks engage in a 'face-off'.
July 14th
Hubert Humphrey, Mayor of Minneapolis, argued for a strong civil-rights platform at the Democratic National Convention, Philadelphia, USA.
 
Japanese General Hideki Tôjô was hanged for war crimes during WWII. While Minister of War he negotiated the Tripartite Pact with Nazi Germany and Italy.
 
The Independent State of Israel was founded. David Ben-Gurion became Israel's first Prime Minister.
 
The National Health Service was established in Britain.
 
Nationalist Party came to power in South Africa.
 
The secret society, Mau Mau, was formed in Kenya, Africa.
 
Orville Wright died. One of the brothers who was first to succeed in powered flight in the Kitty Hawk, North Carolina in 1903. Orville's flight lasted only 12 seconds, and managed 120ft.
 
The Transistor and Long Playing records (LPs) were invented in the United States.
