January 3rd
Soviet cosmonaut Anatoly Kuklin was born in the Chelyabinsk Region of Russia. Served as back-up crew commander for Boris Volynov of the Soyuz 5 mission on the 15th January 1969.
March 15th
NASA astronaut Alan Bean was born in Wheeler, Texas. He served as backup astronaut for the Gemini 10 and Apollo 9 missions and was the Lunar Module pilot for Apollo 12, 14th - 24th November 1969.
March 16th
NASA astronaut Walter Cunningham was born in Creston, Iowa. Cunningham was the Lunar Module pilot for the eleven-day flight of Apollo 7, 11th - 22nd October 1968.
April 29th
Soviet cosmonaut Dmitry Zaikin was born in the Rostov Region of Russia. Zaikin served as back-up for Pavel Belyaev for the Voskhod 2 mission on the 18th March 1965.
June 6th
NASA astronaut David Scott was born in San Antonio, Texas. He served on Gemini 8, CM Pilot on the Apollo 9, and Commander of the Apollo 15 Moon mission, 25th July - 7th August 1971.
September 26th
NASA astronaut Clifton Williams was born in Mobile, Alabama. Back-up pilot for the Gemini 10 mission. He was killed near Tallahassee, Florida, in the crash of a T-38 jet on the 5th October 1967.
 
In the election the Nazi party won 230 seats in the Reichstag, and became the largest party.
 
Franklin D. Roosevelt won the 1932 presidential election by largest the margin of any candidate since US Grant.
 
Werner Heisenberg, German physicist who developed 'Quantum Theory' and the 'Uncertainty Principle', won the Nobel Prize.
 
Emperor Haile Selassie abolished slavery in Ethiopia.
 
Amelia Earhart became the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic.
 
Bolivia and Paraguay clashed in the 'Chaco War'.
 
Aldous Huxley's 'Brave New World' was published.
 
Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney, Australia, was completed and opened.
